Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation The Birthday Girl & The Four Bears - Section 1: Attention Grabber / Introduction

I knew we had Iylia’s birthday as I wrote my lessons last weekend. I guessed it would be fun to have her “star” in our word problem. I guessed it would be a great opportunity to practice what we have learned about writing word problems, and it’s true: kids love to be the “stars” of their learning. Between the birthday crown, the fluffy stuffed bears and the stickers, we had the makings for FUN. Coupled with that, comprehensible instruction, lots of careful monitoring as we worked together, we had some good practice occurring here, as well.

Next step: working with a partner and writing word problems independently!
