Lesson 2 of 9
Objective: SWBAT work in groups to design and build a structure within given restraints to reach a specific goal and address areas of weakness in a design.
I use this presentation to launch the activity. I couldn't get it to upload with an embedded timer, so you'll need to manage the timing on your own.
I chose to make this a set goal instead of who can build the highest to help build a supportive collaborative culture. There is no incentive for me to limit the number of winners. The reason I set the goal so high is my focus is on creating situations where my students are forced to examine what went wrong with their design, and make changes to improve it. If I had made the goal 24 inches, for example, they might have reached their goal right away.
As students are working, I walk around to encourage positive collaborative conversations that include all group members and to encourage groups to examine what is and is not working about their designs, and ask them how they might address any weaknesses.
I make sure to get a photo of every group with their work, then put on a clean up song to speed clean up along. Then I go over the Mission 36 Self Reflection with them to make sure they understand how to complete the form. Relating the categories to thumbs up, neutral, or down works well for my students.
