Reflection: Student Grouping Cooperative Group Work to Discuss and Identify the Theme of Loneliness in Of Mice and Men - Section 3: Student Learning Activity

 

Differentiating the activity can include flexible groupings.  I found that it helps for students to sometimes choose their own group or partner and other times it works best if I  select who they will be working with.  In this activity they were given the choice.  I think it worked well for the most part but I found that one group in particular needed ongoing prompting for them to complete the task.  I did this by asking questions and encouraging them to write the full answer on their organizers.  

I understand why some of my colleagues are hesitant to let students work in groups but I have found that with a lot of practice and encouragement it is worth the time and effort it may take with certain classes.  I'd like to hear what your experiences have been with cooperative team activities such as this one.

Lesson 13 of 15

Objective: SWBAT analyze how complex characters in Of Mice and Men interact with other characters and advance the plot or develop the theme by reading Crook’s experience with loneliness and chart how it affects other characters.

Big Idea: "One is the loneliest number..." An oldie but a goody that sets the stage for Steinbeck's theme of loneliness.
