Reflection: Parent Communication Grade Level Mentor Text for Envisioning Day 2 - Section 3: Independent Reading

Seems like it has taken a long time to get some students hooked on reading.  I am looking forward to getting kids into informational books.  I have a few readers who have not enjoyed reading fiction as much because of they are at a M or below- and they want to be able to read series like Percy Jackson and the Olympians.  I will keep a close eye on their reading volume and books they select to make sure they begin or continue to read lots of books.

Also, I sent home a letter to the parents that required a signature so I was sure they had seen it explaining students' required reading homework, a copy of the reading log, and this example of what their child should be doing in their reading response notebook to capture their thinking on post-its.

This action was very helpful because I heard back from several parents and they were happy to know what their child was required to do nightly for reading.
