Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Sum Sort to 10 - Section 3: Guided Instruction

This lesson is the culminating lesson in a series. Because students have had so much practice with solving, cutting and pasting addition number sentences in the previous lessons, they are up for the challenge of doing them all in one session as a review and practice. The focus of this lesson is on the extended practice time rather than new learning so the majority of time is given to the independent practice section.

The goal is to help the kids understand that there can be many combinations that make the same quantity. One of my students mentioned that the larger the number, the more number sentences they had to use. I asked her why she thinks that happens and she said because when you have bigger numbers, you have more you can break apart. Exactly!
