Reflection: Routines and Procedures There's a method to the madness - Section 1: Warm-Up

 

You will always have those students whose hands will shoot up first every time you ask a question.  Make a conscience effort to share the opportunities to speak by calling upon not only those who are volunteering to speak, but also those who are not raising their hand.  Sometimes you may have to not call on the eager speakers just to send the message that you want to hear from all students in the class.  There a lot of ways you can ensure that all students are given equal opportunity to contribute to class discussion during a discussion.  You can use your attendance roster to maintain a tracking sheet to record when the number of times each student is called in class to make sure that the number of times called are the same. You can create a set of cards or Popsicle sticks with student names and randomly pull names, as  another option.  I typically start with one student in the classroom and call on students in order of where they sit from the random starting point.  By keeping the process random, students know that their time to respond will come and that the “spotlight” to speak shines on everyone equally in my classroom. The method you use for calling on students should be whatever you can effectively use on a consistent basis.
