Reflection: High Expectations Introduction to volume of 3D solids - Section 2: Play of the Day

To develop the conceptual understanding of why the formula for a cone is 1/3 of the volume of a cylinder, it is useful to have a cone and cylinder that have the same radius and height.  What I did this year was do a quick demonstration with water -- pouring water from the cone into the cylinder.  First, I asked students to predict the number of "cone-fulls" of water that would fill the cylinder... and we proved that it was three.  Therefore, the volume of the cone (of same height and radius) is 1/3 the volume of the cylinder.  Cool little activity to do as a demonstration.

Introduction to volume of 3D solids

Unit 11: VOLUME OF CYLINDERS, CONES, AND SPHERES
Lesson 1 of 2

Objective: SWBAT understand and apply the formulas for volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

Big Idea: Why do the formulas for volume of a cylinder, cone, and sphere make sense? How are they related to the area of a circle?
