Reflection: High Expectations Our 100th Day of Kindergarten - Section 2: Procedure

Occasionally, there comes a child who feels defeated before they even begin.  The first words out of their mouths is, "I can't do this."  My job is to show them that they can and will be able to do the task.  I start by showing the child his own name tag.  I ask him if he can read this word.  Often I get the "are you stupid" look as the child says "that's my name".  I tell the child, if you can read your name, you can put in on your list as their first word.  He will ask about his last name and the other children's names at their table, and before long, he has five or six words on his lists.  From that point, he'll either venture to his buddy's table or to the color word chart on the wall.  It is usually smooth sailing after that.
