Reflection: Checks for Understanding The Southpaw - Section 3: Wrap Up

Open response questions - those that require critical thinking- aren't randomly attached to a text. Producing a good one requires careful consideration: What is the question begging to be asked? Well, today when I asked students to do that for "The Southpaw" they instantly came back with Describe the conflict that arises between characters and the series of events that leads to a compromise. "Hmmm," I thought, "that was fast." Then as I glanced around the room at all the smiling faces, one person kindly pointed at the agenda and said, "It's right there. You wrote it yourself!" Ah, yes. Note to self: next time you try out this strategy, don't give away the answer. It would have been so much better to see them work this out for themselves!
