Reflection: Classroom Setup Scientific Method - Section 4: Explain

Within my classroom I have a word wall where I place the key vocabulary for each unit.  This picture is of my word wall for the first unit. I chose the most important words from the unit that students should know by the end of the unit.  The goal of having a word wall is for students to be able to reference words if they forgot the exact name or how to spell the word.  Students find it helpful to be able to refer to the key vocabulary as they are reflecting on lessons through discussion, writing, or reading.  In classroom discussion I will often point to the word wall and tell students to keep in mind the vocabulary words as they are doing a writing activity or during classroom discussion.  At the end of each unit I take down the word wall and put up a new one for the next unit.

Word walls are especially helpful for English Language Learners who benefit from a language-rich environment and become more comfortable with using the new vocabulary in class.  I only place the words in English, but I have seen some teachers use both the English and Spanish translation for key vocabulary.
