Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Working in a Chemistry Lab - Section 1: Introduction

Students do not need to have prior knowledge for this lesson; however, they will have had experience with science labs so will have talked about safety and have used lab equipment.

It is important to review safety and to highlight that safety is especially important in chemistry.

Furthermore, many students do not know the correct name and use of most of the lab equipment we use so its important to have them start to learn the different types of equipment.  For example, many students call all glass containers beakers, as they do not understand that some are Erlenmeyer flasks, round bottom flasks, graduated cylinders, etc.

Working in a Chemistry Lab

Unit 1: Unit 1: Working as a chemist
Lesson 2 of 9

Objective: Students will be able to identify how to safely work in a chemistry laboratory including proper lab techniques and use of equipment through watching a safety video, performing an equipment activity, reviewing a safety contract, and completing a quiz.

Big Idea: Lab safety and identification of lab equipment are crucial for success in chemistry class.
