## Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding We Are All a Happy Fact Family - Section 1: Materials and Activator

During this lesson’s Activator, I noticed that the students needed quite a bit of support to identify numbers that were the parts, and the whole, of a number sentence.

Because of this, I modeled addition and subtraction problems problems on the board and had the students copy onto their whiteboards, and then complete the information using the part/part/whole model.  This seemed to make quite a difference in the students’ true understanding of the number relationships in fact families.
