Reflection: Gradual Release But ... are they really that different? - Section 3: Independent practice

The first time we tried the independent practice, things had been going excellently until we got to independent practice. Guided practice had been fun. The kids were engaged, they were observing details and building upon each other comments. They all drew Venn Diagrams, were excited about getting to do it by themselves, and then .... I told them to compare and contrast their pencil with a crayon. Silence...! I had fallen into the scaffolding trap and given them two objects which had subtle similarities, thus greatly increasing the difficulty level. I was thrilled to see that a few kids were able to do it, but we repeated the independent practice the next day. That time I posted a picture of two dogs.
