Reflection: ELL Students Understanding Multiplication With Equal Groups - Section 2: Mini Lesson

During this lesson I realized the abstract term of group was very confusing for the ELL students in my classroom. Having previously taught first grade for several years, I returned to some of the strategies I used with younger students because it provided a very concrete representation of a group.  This was to use paper plates to represent the groups.  By placing the chips on the plates and naming them as groups the students were able to quickly identify the number of plates as groups.

In the past I have also used construction paper circles, yarn, and pipe cleaners to create groups.  Actually placing items into a defined group helped the students to conceptualize this vocabulary term and move forward in the lesson.  It only took a few minutes with a small group of students, and it allowed them to move forward successfully in this lesson.
