Reflection: Student Ownership Cherished Object or Literary Symbol--Students Decide! - Section 3: Process Discussion


This cherished object twist really creates a powerful set of writing experiences, but it's important to first select a cherished object that is, indeed, cherished.  A few students forgot to do the assignment and brought in a school i.d. or a cell phone.  These will simply not do. They are not at all personal enough.  Other students, though, brought in a dried rose, stuffed teddy bear, sports jersey, and even a bobble head.  These are all unique and will end up giving powerful connections to the novel and later can be used in their own narrative writing to create a unique symbol or motif.  Again, we are building this in stages, so the students don't need to be fixated on the high demands and rigor of this type of writing but to enjoy the fun of selecting an object to share with the class that is meaningful to them on a personal level.
