Reflection: Lesson Planning Gathering The Group Around Charley - Section 4: Vocabulary Games Demonstrations



Today's lesson is a good representation of how many of my end-of-school-year days are sometimes organized.  At this point in the year, with the clock ticking and more than one project in the works, I often find myself slicing up a class period into disparate activities.  These are not always the most fluid lessons, as the transitions between tasks can feel like checking off items on a to-do list, but I find that they are sometimes--especially as a school year comes to a close--unavoidable.  

And necessary.  I believe it is important for a teacher to see projects through to the end.  For example, it may be tempting to think 'There's just not time to demonstrate the vocabulary games--wasn't the creation of the games themselves review enough?'  Believe me, I get it.  However, it is my belief that something larger is at stake when a teacher does not finish what she starts, and that is the trust and respect of her students in the lessons and activities in which she asks them to participate. I write this having experienced both outcomes with my students over the years, of seeing and feeling their disappointment when one of my ideas is not borne out to fruition, as well as glowing in their satisfaction when a project is fully exploited.  As a result, I have decided that I prefer the way the latter makes me feel as a teacher.

And so, some lessons will take the structure of "a little bit of this, a little bit of that" in order to get it all accomplished, but hopefully my students will interpret that to mean that everything we do in class is important.
