Reflection: Unit Planning Narrative Summary - Lesson 4 of Cinder Book Four - Section 3: Lesson

 

In a unit like this one that is rich in narrative reading, it is logical to ask students to create narrative writing.  However, after years of reading countless, very long and frankly illogical short stories in units like this one, I decided to tackle narrative in smaller chunks. This lesson is a result of that reflection. It isn't perfect but is a work in progress as all lessons really are.

The important part is that the students do better work, and I'm doing a better job teaching.  Including the idea of the newscast as a narrative helps me get at the common core standards in a more manageable piece.  I can have students work together and create something beyond just the narrative on the page (which is a far as our short stories usually got). Additionally, this incorporates the idea of summarizing so students have to be concise - a skill that was lost on the previous short story assignments.
