Reflection: Rigor Oh Me! Applying Measurement,Multiplication & Fraction Skills to Make a "Me" Person. Day 1 - Section 3: Drawing Faces

 

Applying the standard to real world was really a challenge for most of my students. In the past, we just eyeballed the measurements after we had folded the paper and we created some interestingly shaped heads! But, with accuracy and mastering the algorithm for this standard, a fairly accurate head can be constructed. But, most needed help. Some were not able to complete it without step by step guidance, but could clearly see after it was done how they applied their skill to making a model of themselves. This is how the rigor of Common Core pays off. The application to real world makes this standard more meaningful to my students and I could see that clearly. They were very proud of their work! Cute kid

Unit 8: Fractions 3 Mini Unit: Multiplying Fractions by Whole Numbers
Lesson 6 of 8

Objective: SWBAT measure to the nearest 1/4" and use multiplication of fractions for real life application.

Big Idea: Measuring the the length and width of their faces, hands, feet and height, students create whimsical selves using adding machine tape and some construction paper.
