Reflection: Accountability Organizing and Drafting - Section 2: Using an Outline to Organize

I used to make outlining an argumentative paper optional, and after the first couple of classes, I realized this was a big mistake. Student writers, even strong student writers, need to create a plan before they start to write or they will often end up frustrated and ready to give up.  As I've honed my outlining instruction I encourage students to simply use a blank document and to follow basic outlining strategies, including headers.  Recently I've encouraged students to start including sources and where they plan to use them in their papers, including a claim and then the evidence as a link.

It's easy to get carried away with outlines, and to create elaborate writing maps that students feel confined to.  I discourage too much outlining, reminding students that this is a plan and plans sometimes change.  Once they finish their outline I want them to feel confident about what they are going to write and to know that they have all the needed pieces to make a strong argument.
