Reflection: Lesson Planning Close Read: My Brother Martin - Integration of Knowledge and Ideas - Section 2: Opener - I Have a Dream

I love close reads for MANY reasons.  One of the biggest reasons that I love close reads is that it lets students interact with the text, think deeply about the text, and reread the text to aid fluency and comprehension.

Another giant reason I love close reads is that you can so naturally integrate other subjects into the close read activities.  When you plan a non-fiction close read, it is easy to read about a science or social studies topic you are learning about.  It is also easy to integrate art and music into the close read lesson activities.  Often the arts are neglected because of pressures for students to perform well in Language Arts and Math.  These close read lessons are a great way to make sure the students are still getting the music and art instruction they need.
