Reflection: Organizational Systems Properties of Multiplication and Addition Reinforce and Enrich - Section 2: Match the Equation


Planning ahead to have materials prepared (in this case the equation cards) is one of those small things that makes a large different in terms of management.  It seems like it wouldn't really matter, but cutting them out ahead of time is a time-saver and makes for better classroom management.  I have a crate on a side counter with folders labeled for the days in the upcoming 2 weeks.  When possible, I put materials that will need to be prepared into those folders and then if students want to hep, if a parent stops by, or when I have a few moments, the small tasks like cutting out cards can be taken care of ahead of time.  It's not the end of the world if one has to do this kind of task during a lesson, and an experienced teacher can find something meaningful to occupy the children while the materials are prepared, but time is precious, and downtime spent doing something that could have been taken care of prior to learning time is best avoided.

Big Idea: Investigating the properties of addition and multiplication at an early age will help set a strong foundation for higher math!
