Reflection: Student Ownership Poetry: Final draft – Day 2 - Section 2: Mini-Lesson

The students and I want their covers to represent the feel of their poetry books. So, I ask them to brainstorm images and illustrations that match their personalities and therefore, the poems that they wrote about. Some students glance through their books and notice a theme that comes up often, like sports or dance or nature, and others notice that their poems vary on topic, so they can choose one or two to focus on. At some point this week, I want students to spend time on the cover of the poetry book so that it will be complete and ready for our Poetry Café at the end of the unit.
