Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Making Connections Between Art Project and Dilations Day 2 of 3 - Section 1: Introducing the Lesson

My school is focused on literacy strategies for all content areas and sometimes in math is seems difficult to activity engage in writing strategies.  This lesson lends itself to anticipation guides really well because I opened with asking students to brainstorm connections that they feel exist between the art project and dilations on the coordinate plane.  With this type of introduction it is possible for only a few students to really think about the goals of the lesson as I want them to and the rest can passively sit by and wait.  I think next year I will use an anticipation guide to open this lesson.  If you are unfamiliar with this literacy strategy, I will include a sample guide for this lesson in the resources.  I took this form from the literacy strategies listed on the Kentucky Department of Education website .

Making Connections Between Art Project and Dilations Day 2 of 3

Unit 7: Linear Equations in two Variables
Lesson 12 of 23

Objective: SWBAT make clear connections between the perspective art project and dilations on the coordinate plane from a center point of dilation.

Big Idea: This lesson will really help your students connect the dots between the perspective art project and the math of performing dilations on the coordinate plane using similar triangles.
