Reflection: Relevance Does McDonald's Serve Burgers? Long Division Algorithm Day 2 - Section 1: Teacher Guided Notes

Why are we doing long division? Common Core is empowering student thinking through develop of fluency.  Students will convert fractions and ratios to decimals without the calculator.  This will need the understanding of long division.  Thus the algorithm has a place in Common Core.  It is not always about conceptual understanding, although conceptual understanding is highly important when deepening understanding and creating critical thinkers.

Mnemonic devices are always a great help when a student needs a strategy to help remember steps of an algorithm.  The Mcdonald Algorithm is universal and easy to remember.  Every student knows Mcdonalds. This relevance piece helps with understanding.
