Reflection: Continuous Assessment Connecting To the Text - Identify Theme, Details, & Onomatopoeia (Day 1 of 2) - Section 4: Students Take a Turn


As students finish their worksheet, walk around and do some formative assessment. Ask students what their chose for details, why they chose their theme or how they know that "...." is an onomatopoeia.  Here's one of my student explaining his worksheet.

This kind of qualitative assessment - letting students talk about what and how they made choices about connections and theme - will give you valuable information about what the students are thinking and how they are using the connecting reading strategy.  Encourage them to identify and read aloud the words and phrases (onomatopoeia) themselves and how they perceive that they bring rhythm and meaning to the story. (RL.2.4)  As students learn to interpret the words and phrases used in the text, including the figurative meaning, they begin to analyze how the author uses specific word choices to shape meaning and tone. This is a shift in the Common Core State Standards toward answering questions and using inferences with careful attention to the text. Going beyond a literal understanding ("the story was fun") to a deeper comprehension level ("I connected to the characters when they screamed 'Arghhh!'") demonstrates a deeper level of understanding. Student reflect how the onomatopoeia that the author provides helps them connect to the text ("The popcorn I ate smelled 'yummy' too.") and interact with the text, bringing schema and background knowledge to build upon the story.
