Reflection: Checks for Understanding Dog Gone Good 11 & 12 (Part 2) - Section 4: Independent Practice

Checking for understanding is vital. The young lady in the video above struggled with the concept of adding extra ones to a ten to get a number 11-19 (with a focus on 11 and 12). Since the rest of the pairs were working well on their own, I took a moment to see if Joann had come to a point where she could fluently and accurately make 11 and 12 on her own.

She puts back the first card she took because she realized that a completed card had accidentally gotten placed in the wrong pile. She quickly put it back and chose the next one down (I removed the completed one from the pile when she was finished).

As seen in the video, she's come a long way. She was able to complete the card fluently and read the number sentence to me with confidence.

The next time I ask her to demonstrate making a number 11-19 using a Spot card, I will ask her to explain to me how she knows that what she did is correct. I want the kids to be able to do the math as well as explain to me why and how they did it.
