Reflection: Relevance Onomatopoeia: Splish Splash - Section 2: Mini-Lesson

 

We spent time in the beginning of the year discussing genre so students know that the two main categories are narrative and informational. Some strategies can be used with both genres, like making predictions, making connections, and finding cause and effect. Some, however, are exclusive only to narrative text, like plot and characterization. It is important to have conversations about this with students so that they have the right types of books in their browsing boxes. A lot of students tend to read only narrative or only informational and it is good for them to get a different type to complete the independent practice tasks. Onomatopoeia is a strategy that can be used with both narrative and informational books so for the assignment today, students can have either types of text in their browsing box. Also, students may not be able to find examples in every book so I always tell my class that if they struggle to find one, they can write their own example on their sticky note instead.
