Reflection: Adjustments to Practice What Makes a Great Novel? Analyzing Student-Selected Free-Choice Books - Section 3: Analyzing a Free-Choice Read: More Than One Way to Review a Book

The assignment works for nonfiction books, too. Simply, the same criteria by which we evaluate a good novel is the criteria that makes history compelling. Books, regardless of genre, tell stories. Stories have a story arc, a.k.a. plot. I tell students who have nonfiction books to use the criteria and see what happens. It works.
