Reflection: Lesson Planning End Of The Year Book Project - Section 2: Project Explanation

 

Let's be honest, here. Once students hand in their major research projects, engaging them in any type of learning can be torturous, although I'm not sure who it is more torturous for, me or them. My students will graduating in two weeks and they have begun to check-out. This can be a common problem when summer is around the corner.

In order to combat that, it's important to think about the difference between busy work and best practices. Yes, we want students to be engaged, and yes, we want them to learn, but how can we do that when they are too busy thinking about walking across that stage at graduation? The best way to is to think about what can be done in class and in a timely matter. They may not retain a lot of information so direct instruction is out. Instead, engaging them in a way that focuses on information, and in this books, that they already know will allow them to be more interested in working, at least that's the goal.

Most of the work my students have done this entire year has been writing based. We have not done a lot projects that can tap into students artistic skills. This also helps them to show what they can do beyond a pen and paper.
