Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Developing "Hitchhiker" Outlines - Section 3: Coaching Session: How to Do an Outline

Kids hate outlining.  When I was a kid, I hated it too.  I distinctly remember doing outlines AFTER I wrote papers, because I didn't see the use in doing the outline first.  However, now that I am older and wiser (sure), I see how the outline helps both the teacher and the student.

The student part is obvious.  The outline structure forces them to organize their thoughts and marshal their evidence.  For a highly structured paper, such as the five-paragraph essay, using an outline can ensure that your paragraphs and support stay in the right order.

Having students outline helps the teacher to isolate problems in student essay writing.  Often, it is hard to tell if a student is struggling with the ideas or their expression.  The outline isolates the ideas and allows the student to tinker with expression, without the pressure of the "whole" paper.  The teacher can then give feedback that is more specific, thus, more valuable.
