Reflection: Real World Applications Inside or Out? Edit and Finalize Your Opinion Essay (Lesson 3 of 3) - Section 3: Model the Editing Process

As carefully as I think through these lessons, there is a reason I get student input on editing. When I thought I was done, one student noticed something I had not. This student found a mistake that I had made - my reasons didn't match my opinion statement!  Oops!

Although I had purposefully made mistakes in the modeling paragraph, I did not intend to have the opinion and reasons mismatched!  However, it was a GREAT teachable moment and an opportunity to see that ALL writers make mistakes. When I edited it myself, I didn't see the mistake. However, when I used the 'purple star' and the kids edited with me, the mistake was evident.

Don't be afraid to find mistakes in front of your kids!  It's a great way to empower them to look for errors and be the 'smart' one that edits others' work.
