Reflection: Lesson Planning How Can You Be An Earth Helper? - Section 1: Teacher Background Knowledge and Preparation


This is the very last unit that I taught my class.  It was the end of the year, and everyone knows how distracted children are at the end of the year.  This lesson really is supposed to be broken up into 3 days like this:

  • Day 1 - Reading and Getting the "Gist" - Strategic Highlighting and Marking Of the Text To Improve Comprehension
  • Day 2 - Students Answer Text Dependent Questions - Go Back Into the Text to Find Evidence
  • Day 3 - Written Work or Project- Responding to the Text

Instead of using this 3 day plan, I decided to teach this lesson as a whole group lesson in 1 day.  Doing the usual center and reading group rotation wouldn't be beneficial because their attentions were waning since it was the last few days of the school year. Making the decision to have a structured whole group lesson that would take most of the morning benefitted my class because, not only did it utilize a longer portion of time, but also my students also did a good job with the lesson.  I wanted to make sure you understood the process so you could adjust this lesson if you had more time.  You could also use this exact process for any article on ReadWorks.

Unit 19: How Do We Help The Earth?
Lesson 1 of 6

Objective: SWBAT use various comprehension strategies in order to better comprehend the text.

Big Idea: Our students will be global citizens one day. What they learn today about taking care of the Earth will have an impact on their actions as an adult.
