Reflection: Student Led Inquiry What's Your Opinion - Which Dessert is the Best? - Section 6: Write the paper

As students write, ask them 'Why did you capitalize that word?' or 'How do you know that cupcakes are messy?'  This kind of individualized formative assessment is very valuable to gauge how each student is using their cognitive skills. Do they know why they indented? Did they check for repeated words?  Listen to their explanation and plan for future lessons based on those answers.

This is an explanation from a student about how he is breaking a word between syllables. This was a skill previously taught and I wanted to see if he could tell me how he decided to break the word. I was looking for him to say something like, 'I broke it between the syllables' but I didn't quite get that. Another student in the background just says 'You taught us that'.  I realize that I need to go back and review that rule so the students can clearly explain their reasoning - 'I know how to break a word at the end of a line because I clap out the syllables'.

Teaching is all about reassessing individually how they generalize skills into other lessons and areas. Constantly talk to your kids and ask they 'how they know what they know' and 'why they are doing ....."  It's a powerful way to guide your instruction to their needs.
