Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Developing a Definition of "Science Fiction" - Section 2: Isaac Asimov Story

This story is in our "Strange Goings On" unit in the textbook.  As you know, Isaac Asimov is one of THE MOST FAMOUS science fiction writers of all time. I have taught the story for five years.  I have participated in professional development and unit writing that have incorporated the story. And, I have finally decided...drumroll please...the story is dumb.

It's not science fiction.  It's more of a commentary about nosy neighbors and the rise of suburbia after WW2 which are a bit beyond our reach in the eighth grade.  I mean, I think the story is fun...if a little silly.  And the kids like it.

But in a world of great stories and with time at a premium, I think this will be the last year I teach "Rain, Rain, Go Away."
