Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Standard Form to Vertex Form Day 2 of 2 - Section 2: Investigation

 

I find it really interesting to think about which method students prefer to complete the square. Most students I work with end up using a more intuitive approach where they complete the square by dividing "b" by two and then adjusting for the constant at the end.  The issue I have with this method is that students ignore equivalency for a while and then revisit it at the end. Some students have trouble with this method because they are so well trained to always maintain equivalency.  The more traditional method of adding "0" to one side of the equation is confusing to some students and make perfect sense to others.   I think it's important to expose students to both methods, exploring the advantages and disadvantages of both, but always revisiting the idea that in the end, both the standard form and vertex form must be equivalent.

Big Idea: Using a quadratic quilting analogy, students learn how to “undo” the process of changing a quadratic function from vertex form to standard form.
