Reflection: Lesson Planning Northern vs Southern Perspectives - Section 3: Application

 

I originally planned to make copies of the specific pages of A Youth's History of the Great Civil War 1866 and with The New Century History of Our Country 1900 found at the links.  Both have to do with the events surrounding Lincoln's Assassination, and there are numerous areas in which to compare.  Best laid plans.  When I tried to copy these pages, I found that because they were interactive, it would be impossible to print either.  Panic set in because I now realized I needed the computer lab at the last minute.  Once that was secured and I settled down, I realized I could print them off through the PDF file, but that just didn't occur to me at the pace I was moving.

To sum it up, what a fabulous "mistake."  The kids thoroughly enjoyed paging through the books on the computer for the activity, and I had printed copies so they could look at both simultaneously as they compared.  Now I wouldn't do it any other way!

An adjustment I'd make is the passage.  There are other areas in that book that will be easier to dissect.  I had to select a passage that coincided with one in a book of a Northerner's point of view around the same time.  Finding the antique book and the passage proved a little challenging, but with more time I'll be able to do it.

Objective: TSWBAT read primary/secondary texts from both Northern and Southern points of view to compare and contrast opinions presented.

Big Idea: Reading differing points of view will shock and resonate with students long after the lesson ends.
