Reflection: Lesson Planning Deconstructing a Critical Essay to Determine the Traits of Good Writing - Section 2: 6 Characteristics of Good Writing

 

I have never taught this lesson before, but since I was looking for a way to talk about voice and passionate argument, I thought at a critical essay on the same subject could be beneficial. Although I may tweak a few elements in the future, I will definitely use this lesson again. I saw my freshmen working together and asking questions in a whole new way. They acted more like my AP juniors than freshmen. I think they felt a sense of ownership and responsibility, since they had control over determining the traits.

 

And the best part? They did a great job! I'm excited to use this work as a baseline for the next class. I hope that my students will be able to apply the traits they saw in a professional essay to their own writing, or at least identify where the essays are weak, so they can ask for help.
