Reflection: Student Ownership Analyzing the Cinematography of Luhrmann's Romeo and Julet - Section 3: Thoughts on the Film

 

Here's my advice: if you show the end of this movie, leave time to talk about it at the end. The reactions from my students were well-worth it! They were funny, thoughtful, real, and as you can tell from the video clips, diverse. Some students really liked this film for its intensity, while others reacted in anger. The close calls were just too close for their liking. One student even declared that the ending was "stupid," and her declaration didn't even bother me. In fact, I thought it was great because it was honest. All their reactions were honest. They talked with each other-- and argued with each other-- about the ending and the director's choices. That's the best kind of classroom!

Analyzing the Cinematography of Luhrmann's Romeo and Julet

Objective: SWBAT analyze the representation of a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment, by comparing the death scene of Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet to the text of the play and to the Zeferelli version of the play.
