Reflection: Problem-based Approaches Are We Good? Ancient Greek Philosophy and Socrates - Section 1: Socrates: CLOSE reading


While students are working, it is important to walk around and monitor the groups. In the beginning of the year groups struggle with sharing and including all members. By this time of the year, I am looking to see that everyone is participating. I look for any obvious situations that could cause problems as well.

When there is a situation between two students in a group, I choose to either break them apart or see how it goes and monitor them carefully. In the case of this lesson two boys that are too good of friends were in the same group. I chose to see how it went and at the end of the group time asked them to rate their work. They were honest and admitted that their work was poor. As we discussed it, I explained that to make the most of their learning they should make sure to split themselves between groups.

Big Idea: We put students context clues and connecting to the test in this lesson. Students will use famous Greek philosophical quotes to make predictions for what they mean.
