Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Algebra: Solving Multiplication and Division Equations - Section 3: Closure

The students did well on this lesson.  I feel that this is because we have been working on solving equations quite often this year.  Also, the students have had practice with variables and equations.  All of their prior knowledge helped the students master this skill quickly.  Their knowledge of "inverse" operations played a key role in their understanding, as well.  Throughout the school year, as we worked on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, we discussed the inverse operation for each.  For subtraction problems, I always required my students to use the inverse operation of addition to check their answers.  This also applies to division.  When the students found the quotient for the division problem, they checked their answers using multiplication.  The students are very familiar with inverse operations.  It is very important to connect skills to prior knowledge.
