Reflection: Standards Alignment Formative Assessment: Modeling Population Growth (A Math Assessment Project Classroom Challenge) - Section 5: Comparing Different Solutions

 

In this lesson section, students analyze solutions of three hypothetical students to the "Having Kittens" problem.

I love this activity because it allows a range of students to compare and contrast their own thinking with the reasoning other other (at the hear of Math Practice Standard 3).

For example, some students do a really nice job of identifying assumptions made in the work being critiqued (Student Work Example Alice 2), while other groups made solid suggestions on how the sample work could be improved (Student Work Example Wayne).

I have found that providing students with samples of student work to critique is a great tool for differentiation as well. Different learners can focus on different aspects of the work. Some students may focus on a particular area of the content, while others may be focusing on other aspects of the work, like clarity and organization.
