Reflection: Student Ownership Teach Me About Addition - Section 3: Presentations

I believe it’s important to make time during instruction to allow students to explain their work, present to their peers and to teach the rest of us about what they know. This is a more reliable insight into where/how students struggle and excel, and it can show much deeper knowledge and understanding than you would traditionally see on a regular paper and pencil test. When students can verbalize what they know, show examples and answer questions they are working with a deeper knowledge than a multiple choice question.

Students who are in the 'audience' during the presentation are taking notes from each group. All students are expected to offer thoughtful feedback after each presentation, which is an expectation we have created from the beginning of the year. We also do a 'celebration' after each presentation.
