Reflection: Discourse and Questioning Fractions Review - Section 2: Whole Group Interaction

In my shading fractions video, you will see and hear a conversation with my students about the difference between whole and part. First Graders are developing the idea that a fraction is a part of the whole. I want them to become precise in their explanations and careful with the terminology they use to describe what they are doing or seeing (MP6). Students need to see how a whole can be broken up into equal pieces and when those pieces are put together, they equal a whole. Discussions can occur at any moment and you need to take advantage of them. It is very easy to just hand over a correct answer to your class, but they will learn more and retain that knowledge better if they develop it themselves. You need to provide them an opportunity to explain their answers and if the answers are wrong, call them on it, pause and discuss it.
