Reflection: Real World Applications Are You a Good Consumer? - Section 3: Finding unit rates and better deals from store flyers

 

First off, the students had a blast looking at all the store flyers.  They were engaged the entire time!  The only hint/tip I can give is to explain to the students that if they want to find the best deal, then they need to compare the dollar amount to the quantity.  They wanted to compare dollar to dollar.  For example, if I get 2 juices for $5 at one store and I get 1 juice for $3.49 at another store, then the first store is the better deal.  I had to explain to them that they needed to look at the size of the container in order to determine the real better deal.  

I also let them compare similar items.  It did not necessarily have to be Chips Ahoy to Chips Ahoy.  It could be Chips Ahoy to any other cookie item.

 

If they were stuck and couldn't find something, I told them to look for laundry detergent, juice, pasta sauce or sports drinks.

 

We had a lot of fun with this activity!.  Take a look at the intensity of the students in these pictures.
