Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Who Left Their Fossils Deep in the Earth? - Section 5: Independent Writing: What do fossils tell us about dinosaurs?

What does their writing tell me?

For starters, one of the students wrote, not in his best printing, but I was happy to read he understood how building a dinosaur is like building a puzzle. This is an important concept in learning about fossils: Yes,BuildingADinosaurIsLikeBuildingAPuzzle.

Another student wrote about what scientists discovered that there were dinosaurs all shapes and sizes: DinosuarsCamesInAllShapes&Sizes.

The other sample, and that putting dinosaurs together takes a long time and much patience is needed: Yes,ItTakesALongTimeToPutFossilsTogether.

Overall, students understood many of the key details about fossils and dinosaurs. Even though their writing was simple, it was accurate.

Additionally, I was happy to see the use of academic language, such as the words extinct, skeletons, and fossils used in the proper way. I think it's because I slowed down so much and really helped students explore the new vocabulary when we were looking at the video and text. I am especially happy to see this result as most of my class is made up of ELL students, and seeing them acquire and use new vocabulary is very exciting.
