Reflection: Routines and Procedures Introductory Paragraph - Section 5: Closure

I like to keep the same writing partners throughout a project so that students build relationships in which they feel comfortable sharing. It’s also helpful during partner talk time because students don’t have to continually repeat the work they’ve completed to that point; the partner has heard their story from the beginning to the end.

However, there are times when I like to shake things up a bit to provide a new perspective on writing or to provide additional support. I knew in advance that yesterday’s task would be difficult and so I reassigned temporary partners for everyone in the room making sure to link a proficient writer with one who needed help planning their story. Because this worked so well, I had students work with those new partners today during partner talk. It was important to me, though that their original partners not drift too far out of the process of their work and so I had them meet together during closing to update each other on their progress.
