Reflection: Performance Tasks Conferencing With Teacher And Peers To Improve Writing - Section 3: Writing And Conferencing

Student writing is flowing much more nicely than previous papers. More importantly, they are making arguments. Still, their interpretation of the text needs to be refined. I need to help them elaborate their ideas and develop their analysis in a more sophisticated manner. Still, we have moved away from the problem of summarizing and their papers are no longer littered with basic grammatical mistakes. One persistent issue continues to be that students allow their personal opinions to get in the way of understanding what the author is trying to say. That the central topic of this story was the controversial topic of abortion made this confusion more likely for certain students. For example, the argument in this paper is largely based on the student’s belief that abortion is wrong, which is not a message Hemingway suggested at all. The question I asked was also not asking students to give their opinion of abortion, but I now can see that it was necessary to make this fact clear.
