Reflection: Routines and Procedures Continuing to build mental math skills - Section 2: Whole Group Interaction

If you watch my students here you will see that even a veteran teacher has moments that no matter what you do, you cannot sustain everyone's attention. This lesson is a little dry and it is sometimes difficult to be entertaining and still teach. Here are some of the methods I have used:

  1. hands on head while I speak
  2. count to 3 and switch to a new seat
  3. gather at carpet
  4. gather at Smart Board
  5. stand while I instruct
  6. draw a picture of what I am saying

One of the issues I am battling this year is my math time is at the end of the day. As I am sure you know, little ones are done by the end of the day. Probably no matter how creative I get, it will still be difficult to maintain attention. Just have patience and always be willing to attempt new ideas.
