Reflection: Poetry: Vocabulary Quiz - Section 3: Assessment

I don’t normally allow students to work together on quizzes. However, I felt a little uncomfortable giving a quiz on terms we’ve only briefly practiced. The quiz was designed as a quick “check-in” to see what students had grasped over the last few weeks. However, it was their first quiz grade in awhile and I didn’t want their assessment grade (which is weighted more heavily than anything else) to tank from something for which they may not be ready. So in this case, I allowed students to work together and am glad, in the end, that I did. There were several instances where students had narrowed their answers down to two types and they spent several minutes debating which was right. In addition to the paper test, I received valuable feedback I might not otherwise have received.
