Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Ways to Make 4- A Lesson on Decomposing - Section 2: Presentation of Lesson

I revised the mistake that I made with this lesson yesterday.  I counted the cubes ahead of time and put them in trains of four with the same color cube in each train.  Unfortunately I do not have enough cubes to give all the students the same color, but I was able to make sure that each student had four of the same color cubes.  This made the lesson go a lot smoother.  The students were more easily able to create different equations with these manipulatives.

Big Idea: Kindergarteners are very concrete thinkers. Therefore, if 2 + 3 = 5, then nothing else can equal 5, or at least that's what they initially think. " Same As" develops a new understanding that there can be several combinations to make 5.
